Trilateral Roundtable: The Road to Green Hydrogen in Egypt

October 15, 2023by Sherif Gamal0

In partnership with the Egyptian Regulatory Reform And Development Activity (ERRADA) and the German-Arab Chamber of Industry and Commerce (AHK Egypt), Synerjies was proud to organize the “The road to Green Hydrogen in Egypt” Roundtable Discussion as part Synerjies on-going strategic cooperation with ERRADA in the framework of our MoU.

The event brought together government heads, industry leaders and ambassadors to discuss the opportunities and challenges facing the green hydrogen industry in Egypt. Opening remarks and speeches for the roundtable were delivered by Eng. Khaled El-Sayed Managing Director at Synerjies, Mr. Jan Noether CEO of AHK Egypt, and Con. Ahmed Elsisy advisor of ERRADA.

Key take-aways from the discussion included:

  1. The government of Egypt is already taking steps towards institutional reform and optimization at the highest level to support the transition to green hydrogen. A milestone is establishing the National Council Hydrogen which is dedicated to research and policy formulation.
  2. The current efforts in developing the Green Hydrogen industry in Egypt is in line with the broader strategic objectives including fighting climate change & fostering sustainability.
  3. Hydrogen diplomacy is an important piece in the puzzle of international climate policy with a huge economic potential to emerging and developing economies such as Egypt.
  4. There is an already formed momentum for Egypt in that matter. Germany and Egypt signed a cooperation agreement to enhance the production of green hydrogen. The EBRD and the EU have also signed a joint declaration of intent to support the energy transition of the Egyptian government.
  5. Egypt must capitalize on the relatively low cost of production and transportation of green hydrogen. To leverage this, there has to be:
  • Effective bridging of the gap between industrial leaders & policymakers.
  • Industrial alignment between leaders to see how they can integrate hydrogen into more industries.
  • Further incentives to investors as it is the case with the production of natural gas.

The roundtable was enriched by the participation of:
